Recently, the MN Department of Corrections published Bishop Marty’s article, “Seven Lessons from the Inside Out”, and wrote a thoughtful perspective introducing his article: Whether you have a Christian religion, adhere to another higher power, or believe in the power of people to change, much can be said about the collective philosophy regarding the importance of life. Facility Religious Resources Coordinators play an important role in assisting offenders in navigating life changes and coping with confinement. Whether those offenders are here with us for a few months, several years or for the rest of their lives, the (potential) value of incarcerated people as human beings drives many of their passions for their work and to help DOC reach our mission. Reverend Marty Shanahan, MCF-Stillwater Chaplain shares “Seven Lessons from the Inside Out” when he works with community volunteers and organizations about his philosophy. No matter your religious beliefs, we can all believe in the power of change, just as our mission states – “To reduce recidivism by promoting offender change…”.

On Saturday, October 29, 2016, Reverend Martin Shanahan was ordained bishop of the Holy Cross Old Catholic Diocese of Minnesota at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. Over 200 people attended the ordination and celebration. More information
